Back in business

It's been almost exactly 1 year since my blog was messed up by wrongly saving a file. I've finally taken the time to fix it. I hope I can find the time to keep it alive this time wink

A new beginning

The search is over and the deal has been signed. On Monday April 20 I am starting a new career as Quality Coordinator at Druco in Halle. Druco is part of the Colruyt Group so it's safe to say I'll have a good employer. I'll be getting external training regarding ISO qualification and other quality management techniques so should be a very interesting experience. The only small downside is the distance but it's by far the most interesting opportunity that I could find. And the way I see it, the extra distance gives me more time to enjoy my car wink

The car I should have bought 4 years ago

FocusDuval.jpg

I really enjoyed my first Ford Focus: looks good, drives great, reliable, ... But somehow I always felt a little bit of regret that I did not buy the 1.8 TDci instead of the 1.6i petrol. A petrol engine is really fun to drive, you rev it, and then you rev it some more... and it sounds great. But a diesel is easier to drive in todays traffic and it has so much torque at lower revs, and let's not forget the fuel consumption. On top of that, I should have bought the Duval kit, ok it was an extra €1.500 but it looks so much nicer.

So, having lost my job and company car I started looking for a new ride. I had already pretty much made up my mind but then I found this baby: Ford Focus 1.8 TDci (2004), 115hp with a Duval kit and less than 100.000 km! And I even like the color! Time to rectify the mistakes of the past wink

The deal has been signed, if all goes well it should be in front of my door in less than a week smile

Choose your flavor

Ok, the flavor selector is finally online again. I'm currently adding some new ones and will be updating them in the future.
The idea is to add a preference pane where registered visitors can choose their default flavor. Unregistered visitors can choose their flavor from the list on top and this will be remembered for 10 hours (this is how it currently works for everyone).
Enjoy.

This is how you end 6 years of working together

Coming back from a customer after a job well done.
Being told there is an important meeting so I go to the meeting.
Listening for half an hour until I get the idea to go check my mail.
Hmmm, no access, I try again, and again... Nothing.

When I heard Carsten talking, I started to realize that they were applying a pure mathematical calculation. Since most departments had to reduce staff by about 10% it seemed inevitable that someone from training would have to be looking for a new job, although this is one of the most profitable departments and was already short on staff.

Coincidentally Kris from IT was disabling accounts from American colleagues that had been sacked. So I ask him if my name is on that list that he's holding in his hands (a bad joke I thought at the time). Kris has a look at the list, then looks at me in a strange way and says "eeuuuuhh yes... haven't you been informed?"

WTF?

It seems I'm the trainer that needs to look for a new job.
But I'm not alone, I just hope the other people were informed in a more civilized way. I guess that's why some people were looking at me like "what is this guy still doing here..."

Life as it is... managers

A man in a hot air balloon is lost. He goes down a bit and sees a woman walking on the ground. He calls out to her: "I promised some friends of mine to join them in an hour but I don't know exactly where I am".

The woman calls back: "you are in a balloon about 10 meters above the ground, you are between 51 and 52 degrees north latitude and between 5 and 6 degrees west longitude".

"You are an information scientist", the man says.

"Indeed, how do you know that?", the woman asks.

"Well", the man says, "you have given me a technically perfect explanation, but I don't know what to do with that information and I still don't know where I am. To be honest, you haven't really helped me and on top of that you made me lose precious time."

"You must be a manager" the woman answers.

"That is correct, how do you know that?"

"Well, you have no idea where you are, nor where you are going. A large mass of air has gotten you where you are now. You have made promises but you don't have a clue how to fulfill them and you expect the people that you are in charge of to solve your problems. The fact is that you are in exactly the same situation as five minutes ago but now it's suddenly my fault."

F'ing Flickr limitations

I knew about the 100 MB upload a month limitation for a free Flickr account but seems like I have now run into a limitation of 200 visible photo's.
This is not funny, I kill you Flickr wink
I'm not in the mood to start paying for a pro account right now, it's not expensive but I need to pay enough already. ISP to start with, webspace, domain, service this, service that, ... too much too much man.
I guess I'll have to be more selective so I'll delete some photo's to make room for new ones. Might upgrade to a pro account later and then I'll upload everything at full resolution.
